Portrait Miniatures - Children

Mary was the eldest daughter of the 6th Duke of Manchester, a Captain in the Grenedier Guards, who was married in 1852 to Countess Louise Fredericke Augusta, daughter of Comte d’Alten of Hanover. She had two brothers and two younger sisters.George, the eldest boy, was born in London in 1853. He grew up to become a Captain in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and M.P. for Huntingdonshire 1877-1880. At the age of two, he succeeded to the Dukedom as his father died in 1855. In 1876 he was married, in New York, to Maria Consuela Yznaga Del Valle (1859-1909). Their eldest son, William Angus Drogo, Lord Kimbolton, born 1877, eventually became the 9th. Duke when George died in Tanderagee castle, Armagh, in 1892. Lady Mary Louisa Elizabeth, married in 1873, the 12th. Duke of Hamilton and Brandon. He died in 1895 and two years later she married again, Robert Carnaby Foster of Easton Park, Wickham Market, Suffolk.

This is a delightful portrait of two young siblings with their pet dog. They are shown with their arms around each other, the elder sister is holding their pet safely as he sits patiently to be painted. The miniature is inscribed 'Vieth' on the reverse and is set in the original gilt frame.
